I like this better:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/06_08_08_arcticboundaries.pdf - taken directly off the site Dr. Calab posted

The only real dispute highlighted is by Alaska, and the archipellago is considered internal waters.

We should gun for the north pole. Even if we don't get it, aiming high might help with any bartering processes we have to go throught.

And Ziggy, I would love to work with you someday, you're cool shit.

It's a big country but not many people in the north and I know all the one's that matter as far as making thing's happen.

You give me a location for a base camp on Baffin island and in one day I would have it in the works to have the camp on the way from Ontario, fuel from winnipeg,snow-cats for road building along with all necessary equipment for any maintenance on it,Core drilling heli shacks from Saskatchewan, some are still up there and available as is the cats, graders and other equipment.
Within a week I could also have all the expediting farmed out to a guy in Baker.
He would take care of the fuel and food supply as would Calm air and the Northern store's which was formerly the Hudsons bay company and an expert in supplying the North.

Everything would have to come by air right now untill late June when the ice melts and the barges have a 3 month window to sail and ship good's.

It would take a few trips with the Hercs. I could make this happen so easily,I'm really good where logistics are concerned and I met a lot of the right people to make it happen in my 3 years in the arctic.

If were going to do make work project's then I cant think of a better one then this.

How many peeps is an ice breaker going to employ?
And they will break ice for what purpose? To show we own the north?

Lets just get in there and get mining/drilling.
Hair straight back,it's ours and were going to show that by showing we can work it.

Seem's a better idea then bailing out the auto industry.

Up must have alot of time on your hands Ziggy. And unfortunately I don't work for NDHQ, so I couldn't specify the best location for a base camp, nor could I co-ordinate plans to make shit happen.

Though I'm sure there would be nthing wrong with you starting up your own secrity & prosperity corps that is dedicating to protecting and dveloping the north while producing a profit from mineral/energy extraction.

Read your Canadiana. We claim our border goes right up to the North Pole.
So Russia wants to as well. That reinforces our own claim.
The North Pole is a POINT, not a place. Plant a Maple Leaf there too and tell Putin we agree from there to his eastern and western border is THEIRS, from there to OUR eastern and western border is OURS.
The Yanks are just egging this on because they have such a minor slice. Hell they're already trying to steal some of ours.

not fair thgouh, sicne we have landmass closer to the northpole then the russians, Norse, or Americans, just as the danes are closer by 20 miles then us. So theoretically the point where all the tips of the pie slices meet should be somewhere on the far side of the globe, and I feel that as the nation with the most actual landmass in the artic, we should make the unfair push for the northpole, and be the only country on the planet with 25 timezones.

If the Russians want it so bad, let's sell it to them. Ice goes for what? $3 for a 2kg bag. We could pay the Torries budget off.

Better read some news, the border is being drawn up by the Russians useing geological features found on the ocean floor.

Which relates to the previous comment that they don't have actual islands a stone's toss away like we do.
The North Pole's as good a demarcation point as any, so we should use it. We could start by laying a string of buoys from the Pole to the Alaska/Yukon border and another to the mid-line of the straight between Baffin & Greenland. Serve notice.

I'd rather have more. our fair share lies beyond the north pole, both based off of surface ond subsurface geography.

There's going to be some major exploration work on Baffin this year and probably a new huge diamond mine.
Good place to start from.

way south of the hotspots though. Sayign a project in baffin ill help leverage change in the extreme north is like saying a project in BC will benifit the Ontario manufacturing industry.
