BRANDON, Manitoba Heads were turning in downtown Brandon in early January as soldiers dressed in full fighting order patrolled the streets. Fully equipped soldiers are a rare sight in this prairie city and they drew a lot of attention from its inhabitan

Wow...lot of Manitoba threads going tonight.

Hmm, Brandon and the entire Westman area supports our troops. We have a military base in this region in Shilo. And our M.P. is a Conservative, and a lot of people have the "Support Our Troops" stickers here, and a big sign when you enter Brandon from the South on #10, has a Pro-Troops message.

Its not the type of community that would be upset by soldiers patrolling the street.

They just gotta keep a watch on the downtown area. near the Brick, Town Centre, and Salvation Army branch..thats where the crime and prostitution is.

Gee. Holiday in Manitoba? BC had to work. :-(

Support for the soldiers in Brandon was evident by the numbers of people waving, beeping horns as they passed and taking photos. "Everyone weve seen has been really supportive," said Pte Shaw.

It's good to see that support, considering too many here think of our military as extra civic workers, only needed to shovel snow.

The federal constituency of Brandon-Souris (where I live) is very similar to the Albertan type ridings.

Went Liberal once in 1993, with Reform 2,000 votes behind, and in 1997, and 2000 it was PC, but basically a 2 way race between Reform/Canadian Alliance and the PCs.

And having the entire military community in Manitoba leave Winnipeg for Shilo, just boosts the support out in our region.

My dad said he was in the nearby small town, Ingersoll during WW2 when a company sized unit took the main steet. Unannounced, traffic stopped, while the troopers leapfroged from doorway to doorway. As 1 guy darted ahead the rest provided cover.
Dad said they took the two blocks in about 5 minutes....
Then he said they boarded trucks to the next event---live-fire----taking an abandoned barn....unintentionally setting it on fire in the process---whoops.....tracers.....
