CALGARY - Canadian athletes whose concerns about China's human rights record might lead them to speak out during the Beijing Olympics should just stay home, says Richard Pound, Canada's senior International Olympic Committee member.
"ryan29" said keep mouth shut ? sounds like these olympics are turning into a bit of a farce . not making the olympic movement look good at all .
The thing is these athletes will be the first ones to tell you they don't want a boycott of the olympics and that it's about the athletics and not politics.
Canada is a free country and if someone told me to keep my mouth shut i would scream at the top of my lungs for a year. although in china they might arrest you so maybe the whole Canadian team should just stay home.

well that it is , don't really think these coments help out the olympics or there image in general . the whole china olympics is starting to look like the idea was in fact a very bad idea . and not a good place to have them at all .
Athletes receive funding to participate in sports not to participate in politics. Run for office if you can't keep the piehole shut for a couple of weeks.
Pound is a relic of the 19th century utopians who resurected the olympics with some soolly headed notion of world peace. International competitions are doomed to be political and nationalistic in principle. Adolf Hitler proved that in practice----and the Soviet Bloc carried on the tradition.
Pound's advice is much like Avery Brundage' banning of professional athletes but turning a blind eye on the "shamamateurs of the eastern bloc.

The athletes need to concentrate all their energy into their event.
