Even before the economic crash last fall, government figures show the CBC had already rung up another $59 million in red ink for the year ending Aug. 31, 2008 -- on top of its usual handout that was 8% higher last year than 2007.

Why so it can rip you off even more?

Tell us again why everyone out in the boonies should have to PAY to watch the news, but you shouldn't.

They have the balls to ask for more money while all other networks have to make cuts because ad revenue is disappearing. They should stick to the news(objective news  ) and STFU for a few hours a day, I'm sure the people out in the boonies will survive.

    Make cuts like everyone else.

The CBC turns a profit for about 3 weeks during the year, at the end of May and into early June during the Stanley Cup semis and finals, and on the rare Saturday Nights when 2 Canadian teams meet in the early HNIC game. They should take a page from TVO's and PBS's playbook and, instead of airing "Coches Corner", they should be drumming up donations during intermissions. Any private broadcaster similarly managed would have gone tits up ages ago.

...if the CBC was into porn they may actually be able to pay us back.

Sell the CBC (and don't give me this crap about selling low and buying high). A $billion+ a year in savings is a damn good investment.

As for people out in the boonies, why would they pay any different an amount from me?

Agreed. Governments' role is not to provide me with hockey broadcasts and re-runs of the Simpsons and Anne of Green Gables.

Sell the TV, put a little more into the radio and net. Keep newsworld. Put the rest on the debt.

If you live in a city, you don't have to pay for tv, you choose to pay. Or you'd have a coat hanger/rabbit ears too.
The problem is the transmitters have been OFF for over 5 months here. And most people are so damn brainwashed they think you have to pay for service so they're not demanding CBC stick to its mandate and deliver those rural services the taxes pay for.
